How to Bleed a Radiator: A Step-by-Step Guide

Learn how to bleed a radiator to improve heating efficiency and comfort in your home with this comprehensive guide.

What Does Bleeding a Radiator Mean?

Bleeding a radiator means releasing trapped air from inside your heating system. Over time, air builds up in radiators and prevents hot water from circulating properly.

The result? Cold spots, patchy heat, and a boiler working harder than it needs to โ€” which costs you money.

Signs Your Radiator Needs Bleeding

It's not always obvious when a radiator needs bleeding. These are the most common warning signs to look out for:

  • Cold spots at the top โ€” the top of the radiator feels cooler than the bottom
  • Gurgling or hissing noises โ€” air moving through the system causes unusual sounds
  • Radiator slow to heat up โ€” takes noticeably longer than usual to reach temperature
  • Uneven heat across rooms โ€” some rooms warm up fine while others lag behind
  • Higher energy bills โ€” your boiler compensating for poor circulation uses more fuel

If you spot any of these, it's time to bleed.

What You'll Need

You don't need any specialist tools. Everything required costs just a few pounds from any DIY store.

  • Radiator bleed key โ€” a small square key that fits the bleed valve
  • Old cloth or towel โ€” to catch drips and protect your floor
  • Small bowl or container โ€” placed directly under the valve
  • Rubber gloves โ€” optional, but useful to protect against hot water

How to Bleed a Radiator โ€” Step by Step

Step 1 โ€” Switch Off Your Heating

Turn off your heating and wait at least an hour for the radiators to cool completely. Working on a hot radiator risks burns and makes the process much harder to control.

Step 2 โ€” Find the Bleed Valve

The bleed valve is the small nipple at the top corner of the radiator. It usually has a square slot in the centre. Some are covered by a small plastic cap โ€” just pull it off.

Step 3 โ€” Protect the Area

Place your cloth on the floor beneath the valve and hold your bowl underneath it. Even a small amount of escaping water can stain carpets or mark wooden floors.

Step 4 โ€” Open the Valve

Insert the bleed key and slowly turn it anti-clockwise โ€” about a quarter turn is usually enough. You'll hear a hissing sound as trapped air escapes.

Keep the key in place and wait. Once the hissing stops and a steady trickle of water appears, all the air has gone.

Step 5 โ€” Close the Valve

Turn the key clockwise to close the valve. Hand-tight is enough โ€” don't over-tighten or you risk damaging the valve.

Wipe away any water residue with your cloth to prevent rust marks.

Step 6 โ€” Check Your Boiler Pressure

Bleeding can cause your boiler pressure to drop. Check the pressure gauge on the front of your boiler โ€” it should read between 1 and 1.5 bar.

If it's below that, you'll need to repressurise the system using the filling loop. Check your boiler manual for the exact steps.

Step 7 โ€” Turn the Heating Back On

Switch your heating back on and let the radiator fully warm up. Run your hand across the surface โ€” if it heats evenly from top to bottom, you've done it correctly.

If you still feel cold spots or hear gurgling, the problem may be deeper than trapped air.

Tips for Best Results

A few good habits will keep your radiators in great shape year-round.

  • Bleed annually โ€” every September before winter is the ideal time
  • Start furthest from the boiler โ€” work your way back towards it when bleeding multiple radiators
  • Don't ignore persistent cold spots โ€” sludge buildup may require a professional power flush
  • Check pressure after every bleed โ€” low pressure means your system needs topping up
